Help feed and care for horses rescued in some cases just minutes away from slaughter, and give them a second chance at a good, peaceful life in their new homes!

Although the last horse slaughter plant in the United States has finally been shut down, the future for many horses is by no means assured. The Fund for Animals rescues horses around the country, both wild and domesticated, and gives them a new home and a new life at one of Fund's sanctuaries for rescued animals. Here are profiles of some of those rescued horses, and information on how you can help.

In July of 2008, 155 horses arrived at their new home at the Duchess Sanctuary in Oakland, Oregon. This recently acquired refuge is the sister sanctuary to Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, in Murchison, Texas where nearly 1200 animals, including 555 horses and burros, are given permanent homes. These two equine sanctuaries are the largest such efforts in the world, providing homes and hope for hundreds of injured, abandoned, and mistreated horses.

The Duchess Sanctuary equine residents are horses saved from the PMU (pregnant mares' urine) industry. Many of the older mares spent 6 months of the year, for 20 years, attached to urine collection devices in stalls where they could not even turn around. These mares were kept continually pregnant so that their urine could provide the hormones desired for a popular drug brand. Collectively, these mares spent nearly 500 years on the PMU lines and delivered almost 1,000 foals.

Many of those foals, and any mares that outlived their usefulness, were sent to slaughter. However, a small group of these poor horses now have a chance at a decent life, rescued literally 15 minutes before they were to be sent to an auction where, according to the auction manager, they would be sold by the pound. Most of the mares saved were pregnant and just weeks away from giving birth.

Today, these same horses and their foals are able to roam across hills and valleys, feel the wind and the sun, and enjoy a freedom that is their birthright. Plentiful food and proper veterinary care help ensure that their later years are as idyllic as their first years were hellish.

At Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch, two "miracle horses" exemplify recent and ongoing rescue efforts. Mariah and Sahara, a mother and daughter pair, along with 28 other horses, were rescued after The Fund for Animals won a court ruling closing down Cavel International, the last operational horse slaughter plant in the United States. The horses were queued up to be slaughtered when news of the court decision reached Cavel managers, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture pulled inspectors from the plant. At that point, the horses were reloaded onto a truck and returned to the stockyard in Cheyenne, Wyoming where they came from. After the owner contacted The HSUS for financial and logistical help, he relinquished ownership and the process to find them new homes began. While these 30 horses were transported to safety, the majority of the other poor horses caught in the pipeline that day at Cavel were, sadly, routed to feedlots en route to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.

But at their new home, Mariah and Sahara have found open pastures to roam, plenty of food to eat, and proper medical care. The Fund for Animals networked with other organizations around the country to find homes for the other 28 rescued horses as well, ensuring they could live out the rest of their lives in safety and peace.

The horses at Black Beauty Ranch and the Duchess Sanctuary enjoy plentiful hay, pastures in which to run and play, vaccinations and veterinary care, and even toys such as beach balls and water buckets for some of the more playful and friskier young ones who were born at the time of the PMU mares' rescues.
